Bruce Greenwood as Dr. Nathan Bradford
Nathan was the founder of the Morpheus Institute, a sleep psychologist who had been fired from Stanford University for his revolutionary theories. He is by turns boss, mentor, conscience, and driving force behind the group; wanting honestly to help troubled clients, and yet ever consumed with what might be the true motive behind his methods: reviving his comatose wife Gail.
Bruce Greenwood has made a career of substantial supporting roles in films such as Thirteen Days, Double Jeopardy, and is best known to genre TV audiences for his lead role in Nowhere Man. Visit Pamela's wonderful Bruce Greenwood Website for much more on him.
Naomi Watts as Kate Russell
Kate was one of the doctors who followed Nathan from his leave of Stanford to his founding of the Institute. A dream interpretor who hails from Australia, Kate constantly does everything in her power to assist Nathan in helping clients with their dreams. She also helps -- with what some might call reluctance -- as Nathan tries to wake his wife Gail from her coma. It's clear from the pilot episode that Kate cares for Nathan slightly more than she lets on-- and also that she's opposed to the idea of moving in on a "married man".
Naomi Watts was most recently seen starring in the blockbuster remake King Kong, as well as in the chilling psychological horror thriller The Ring. For lots more on her, check out Anthony Larme's shrine to all things Naomi. (Drop him a line and thank him for the beauty photos you see all over this site, too!)
Kathrin Nicholson as Gail Bradford
Gail, Nathan's wife, has been in a coma ever since a car accident that may or may not have taken the life of Nathan's partner, McCaig. She may be the ultimate reason Nathan began his pioneering walks into the dream world: he often uses the machines to enter her coma-set mind, spending many happy hours with her, in memories of peaceful places they used to visit in real life. She is something of an advisor, cheering him on as best she can from her bed. As long as she remains in the coma, Nathan will search for a way to use the sleepwalking as a key to bring her out.
Jeffrey D. Sams as Ben Costigan
Ben began his career flying fighter jets for the Air Force, until the nightmares he was having compromised his ability to do the job. Turning to the Institute team for help, he eventually joined them as a full-fledged member. Ben is a family man as well, deeply devoted to his wife and his baby son.
Jeffrey D. Sams had a supporting role on the brief run of ABC's romantic comedy series Cupid in 1998/99, as straight man to Jeremy Piven's exuberant fallen-Greek-god of love. He's also appeared multiple times as Det. Lockwood on CBS' juggernaut crime drama CSI.
Abraham Benrubi as Vince Konefke
Vince is something of a textbook geek, who has made his preoccupation with science fact (and fiction) work for him. The "pilot of the lunar module" that is the mind-boggling assortment of computers running the Institute's sleep hardware, Vince is also a sci-fi buff, always keeping one eye on the latest exploits of the Incredible Hulk over his MEG readouts of patient brainwaves.
Of course, Abraham Benrubi is better known to us from his stint on NBC's much more successful medical drama E.R.
Michael Watson as Steve Turner
Steve originally helped Nathan to organize the plans and build the equipment that the Institute uses. A daredevil, as well as being slightly smug about the technology he helped create, Steve was only around for a short while, before meeting a brutal end in a car accident.
Ray Wise as McCaig
From what little we're told about him, McCaig was Nathan's partner in the early stages of what would become the Institute's sleep research. They were apparently best friends, but McCaig was killed, presumably in the same car accident that put Gail into her coma. Now McCaig haunts not only Nathan's dreams, seeming to blame Nathan for his death, but has crossed into the dreams of the other sleepwalkers, particularly Kate.
Ray Wise is perhaps best known as evil dad Leland Palmer, the answer to the running question throughout David Lynch's early 90s drama Twin Peaks-- "Who killed Laura Palmer?" He's appeared in guest roles on nearly every drama series, including Profiler, Beverly Hills 90210, and The A-Team. (View Mr. Wise as the devil in his brand new series this fall on CW, Reaper!)
Harry Groener as the Smiling Man
Literally the bogeyman in every respect; he first appeared as a trickster in the nightmares of a young boy the team was asked to help. However, he quickly took hold in Nathan's own nightmares, as a henchman/alternate form of Nathan's dead friend McCaig. During Nathan's near-death experience in Passed Perfection, he even showed up to escort Nathan into the afterlife-- and whether it would have been a hellish one is left up to the viewer.
Harry is infamous to legions of fans as the villainous Mayor Wilkins III on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, he's also sung and danced in nearly every important Broadway production to come along, including Cats, Oklahoma, Spamalot, and the 1992 hit Crazy For You.
